Regarding f/2.8 vs. f/4, I'd say get the f/2.8. To me, the f/4 seems like a waste of a lens. f/4 just isn't fast enough to effectively get the perfect portrait bokeh or capture action/sports/events in the right light. The price hike from f/4 to f/2.8 is worth it. The price hike from Mk II to Mk III is not.
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM is Canon's second lens to get a Nano USM (Ultrasonic Motor) driven AF system (the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens was the first) and expectations for performance similar to the first implementation were realized. Nano USM acts like heavily-caffeinated STM AF, combining the benefits of a high speed
The new edition, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II ($2,799.99), covers the same focal range, but sports a new optical formula that enables clearer results, faster focus, and a significant reduction The Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS III (mk3) though it can be found for about $1900 when it has a $200 rebate, is almost the same optical formula as its predecessor, and certainly not a massive leap ahead of the Sigma in any one regard. Lastly, the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM, at $2,598, is not a whole $1100 better, either. Has full-time manual focus. Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8L USM. Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS. With full-time manual focus, you can move the focus ring whilst it is in AF (autofocus) mode. This means that you can make manual adjustments once the AF has finished, without changing to manual mode.
In reply to mariadc • Jun 19, 2013. A good copy of the 70-200 IS f/2.8 II on a good body will be a very sharp, fast, and accurately focusing lens. As others have pointed out, though, that's a small subject for the camera's AF to grab, regardless of the lens, and using AI Servo will exacerbate that difficulty.
"As mentioned, Canon has informed us that the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens has the same optical design as the II. That makes predicting the III's image quality easy, especially since I've used the prior version of the lens for over 8 years.
